Christmas is fast approaching, so treat your employees! 🎄

Despite what your Accountant tells you, don't fall into the trap of doing it just to save money on tax. Remember, it's an expression of your appreciation!

The boring accounting bit... You can give tax-deductible gifts to employees under certain conditions. Here are the key points:
1️⃣ Trivial Benefits: Gifts that qualify as "trivial benefits" are tax-free. To qualify, each gift must:
▪️ Cost £50 or less (including VAT).
▪️ Not be cash or a cash voucher.
▪️ Not be a reward for work or performance.
▪️ Not be part of the employee's contract.
2️⃣ Annual Events: Gifts given as part of an annual event, like a Christmas party, can also be tax-free if the cost per head does not exceed £150.
3️⃣ Other Gifts: If the gift does not meet the trivial benefits criteria, it may still be tax-deductible if it is given for a specific reason, such as a long-service award, and meets certain conditions.

Whilst they can boost morale, have tax benefits, be cost-effective, and positive for work culture, remember this:
❗ There are strict rules on what qualifies as a tax-free gift, which can limit the types of gifts you can give. ❗ Keeping track of the cost and ensuring compliance with HMRC rules can be time-consuming. ❗ Employees might not always value the gifts as much as a cash bonus or other forms of recognition. ❗ If not managed carefully, gifting could lead to perceptions of favouritism or inequity among employees. ❗ If gifts are given too regularly, they might lose their special impact and be seen as just another part of the routine.

Here are a few ways to keep gifts meaningful:
▪️ Mix up the types of gifts you give to keep things interesting.
▪️ Tailor gifts to individual preferences and interests to show genuine appreciation.
▪️ Instead of regular gifts, consider giving them at unexpected times or for specific achievements.
▪️ Combine gifts with other forms of recognition, such as public acknowledgment or additional time off.

And lastly, gifts do not count towards wages when calculating the minimum wage in the UK!
